Still have 2 that came with a pair of Daiwa HPB purchased many many moons ago.Rods were used regularly but didn't use the reducers.Yeah they're of no use to me whatsoever. I've had the rods built with a fixed reel seat for fixed spool use

Could be that the rod is already reinforced for a reducer and the thread wrap is to prevent fraying. On a really thick walled butt you don`t need anything at all in theoryI've seen some rods reinforced with whipping, at the butt where it meets the reducer. That should be a nice cheap way of reinforcing a rod.
