Hi all, as it’s getting closer to hound season, I thought I’d have a look and see if I could find one.
I headed down to my favourite crab collecting spot during the day to get some peelers with my kids. Unfortunately I was met with someone else already there and had the annual “I’ve put traps up here, this is my spot” conversation. I chose to ignore him and carried on sourcing my peelers much to his dismay. I’m sorry, but no one has the right to lay claim to public property.
That little ugliness aside, I picked up about 30 peelers, enough for what I wanted and we left the guy to continue his harvest of every marine creature alive in the area. .....he had 3 or 4 buckets loaded on a trolley so I’m fairly sure they weren’t just for personal use!!
Later in the evening, I got down to my spot on the north Kent coast. I was really torn between two options but went with my gut and stuck to where I thought would be quietest. I was the only person around for the whole night, perfect!
I chucked one rod out loaded with crab in the hope of an early hound or even a bass and the other bluey for the obligatory ray.
First cast on the crab and I pulled up a double shot of dogs on the pennel, this was shortly followed by another on the bluey. This was not the plan!!
The NE wind was bitingly cold and a lot stronger than I’d anticipated but it wasn’t insufferable once I was tucked away in the bivvy.
Despite the busy start, things quietened after that and I wasn’t too disappointed the dogs seemed to have moved on. Just after high, I got a nice slack line on the peeler and after a spirited fight by the fish, my first hound of the year came in. It was only about 3lbs but I was pleased as punch to get one.
Another hour or so went by when I got a better looking pull on the bluey. I lifted in and met weight straight away, this felt like a better fish.
I struggled to land her in the surf as the beach steeped away quite rapidly in front of me but after a carefully timed pull, I managed to ride the fish in on a wave and grab her. I was right, it was a good, chunky thornie. She pulled the scales down to a healthy 10lbs 10oz, my 3rd double of the year!!
I fished on into the small hours with only another doggie to show before my final cast of the night saw a smaller hound pup of around 1.5lbs.
I packed up around 3am after a really enjoyable session... despite the wind!
