Back out early again this morning.
Fished Dungeness point 5,30 till 7am.
First cast with a single worm bait and a sea rat was instantly hooked.
Ok, point proven. I can still catch fish!
Mind you, I sort of knew that a sea rat was more or less guaranteed!
With that done, I swapped over to a live bait rig.
Out of curiosity and no bite, I wound in after 5 minutes to find the bait stripped.
What to do?
I really did not fancy targeting sea rats all morning, but as I was only armed with frozen blacks, fishing a mackerel head close in was not an option.
I stuck with the live bait rig. Unfortunately, the bait got stripped immediately.
I went back to the small hook rig to catch a sea rat that way.
Impossible.
Not a clue what was down there, but bait was instantly stripped. Not a bite at all!
I had a pod of porpoises working about 100yds Infront of me and a seal to the left of me, so there must have been some fish out there for them to be feeding on?
Before to long it was time to go .
Just one of those mornings I guess.

Unlucky Shirl, I always found the velvet swimmers to be a nuisance down dungy in the summer months, also spiders but from your report and experience I’m guessing you think its something else other than crabs?

Piranha pouts???

When fishing Pett Level, I can see dungeness power station clear as a bell on the other side of the bay, (admittedly quite a few miles away!) I often find the baits quickly stripped, usually pick up a velvet swimmer when it’s getting bad. Quite a few spiders in the bay too, but they tend to snip the hook off too.

Shrimp or bait fish would be my guess.
When the shrimps are in force you sometimes foul hook them!
