I’ve been after the allusive Double Figure Bass for a long time now. My biggest so far being 8.5lb. This year I decided to really hammer it as I reckon the key is find a likely spot and hammer it with big baits, at the right time.
With a high tide coinciding with sunrise this morning I decided on a trip to my usual spot, with the usual tactics, half a Mackerel or a large whole squid.
So far this summer it’s been slow with decent Bass few and far between, for me anyway.
0400 and out went the bigbaits, nothing but weed until about 40 minutes after the slack when it eased off. The best time at this mark is during the first of the ebb, you don’t get long as the tide steams through when it gets going, but it depends a lot on tide size.
Had a cracking bite on the half Mackerel, nearly ripping my rod out of the stand which I lash down, totally missed it.
Always amazes me how a Bass can smash a 6/0 pennel and not hook up?
Anyway 30 minutes later and off goes the whole Squid, rod arched over and that beautiful sound of the drag.
This time it was on and it felt a good fish, as I was using Squid I was praying it wasn’t a big Smutt and when it surfaced I immediately saw it was a good Bass.
Landing is tricky here but after farting about for a bit I managed to slide it up the sloping wall, returning it would prove even harder.
My heart was racing, I knew this was in the region of a double?
After weighing it I tried to walk down the sloping wall to return it, this saw me stand on some weed and going arse over tit with the Bass flying in the air and me in the harbour next to a really pissed off Bass.
I ended up standing up to my waist, holding the fish. After 5 minutes of holding it she recovered and swam off strongly.
So the question is how big do you reckon it was?
The pictures not great as I was fishing alone.
Thanks for reading, hope you’re still awake.
John
