Many years ago, my pal AW and his parents used to holiday in a chalet on the cliff at Whitsand Bay in Cornwall.

They would dig sandeels for bait at low tide and lay a ground line, wading out and weighting it at both ends with a large stone. They caught all sorts of fish, including bass, turbot, plaice, rays and dogfish, and occasionally the line would be smashed up by something large, maybe a tope or a conger.

Alas! There are far fewer sandeels about now, and your most likely catch is a surfer. PH
