These days I need a good reason to pay the £15 for 10 hours parking at Ferrybridge (I looked into extending it on the Justpark app to 12 hrs but that was £30 !!). With Wednesdays storms and a change to more northerly winds overnight into Thursday, combined with big tides, meant I was begrudgingly willing to part with the cash.
Arrived about 1pm and set off up the shingle. My plan as always is to keep walking until there is little chance of someone plonking themselves 40 yards away. I was pleasantly surprised to see only a handful of anglers and even more pleased to see coloured water extending about 400 yards out to sea. I trudged West for 40 minutes and got myself sorted. There was quite a dump with 4-5ft waves but this was forecast to reduce to just over 3ft by 6pm.
Two pennel pully rigs with circle hooks as the pennel, and a combination of squid and sandeel for bait. I’d also picked up some ragworm in Plymouth en-route.
One rod out and whilst setting up the second I noticed my line on the deck. A solid weight on the other end and eventually I managed to bring a nice 3-12 bass through the dump, after unhooking it swam away strongly. A good start.
The next couple of hours continued like this with me rarely able to get a baited rig ready before something had a go. Next along was a 4lb 2oz Codling to squid. I anticipated cod and had my cool box ready so this one was kept for tomorrows dinner.
Over the next 90 mins or so 3 more codling (all about 3 ½ lbs), a few doggies and a pouting were landed.
One of the codling unfortunately refused to stay in the water and kept getting beached. Eventually it was clear it wouldn’t survive so rather than waste it I took that home too. I usually only take one as I don’t like to take more than one meal. I know if it goes in the freezer it will stay there forever.
I had a break as I was gagging for a cup of tea and something to eat. On resuming about 40 mins later the cod had gone ! During the main part of the flood all I could catch was an occasional pouting. I tried a flapper rig with ragworm but that just came back in a tight knot and covered in slime.
As darkness came and high water the eels and pouting became prolific so it was time to head home. My parking was due to expire anyway. In a way I hoped to carry home an empty coolbox, by making tea with the frozen water, and using up all the frozen bait. However a couple of frozen bottles were needed to keep the fish cool so it weighed quite a bit more than before. A great day out and my best ever session at Chesil.
