I tend to use 2m - 6ft leader length for general fishing off the beach, If flatty (sole,plaice, dabs etc) I tend to use between 300mm (1ft) and 600mm (2ft) lengths over sand depending on sea conditions.
 
Not hard to tie an up and over running ledger
I have used them on a running ledger previously, go fed up with double whiting and pout, so back to basics for me.
