Popped over the Breakwater early this morning, nothing happened till first light broke through the grey drizzle that had settled there, a joey was first out, quickly followed by a couple others, through the gloom I could see several white Gannets hitting the water, some very close to where I was casting, as the drizzle stopped and I could see better, there was over 30 Gannets hitting all over the place, at times 3 and 4 was coming down within feet of each other at the same time, was spectacular to watch.
Id had about 10 small mackerel before I had a huge take that bent the rod right over, then ping was off, bugger!, but a big splash showed the culprit, a fecking great Seal had snaffled it.
Just as I was swearing at him, a low black cloud shot around the end of the pier a few feet above the water, Shags, well over 50 of them, never seen so many together, they had come to join the gannets feeding.

Now every time I thought the Seal had buggered off, Id latch into a fish only to get it pulled off the line by the fecker that was in hiding waiting for me to catch for him!.
After losing 4 fish to him, I gathered me gear and moved back down the breakwater to fish the outside, a few casts showed that there was sod all this side. I could see two lonely Shags bobbing about and thought their not going to get any breakfast today, when high above me a shag flew over and landed next to the other two, then all three took off, flew along the breakwater, around the end and joined the party on the inside, I thought, its nice to have mates that come tell you where the fish are.

A few more casts with no returns had me heading back to the car, not a great fishing day, but the wildlife had put on a excellent show, even the Seals made me smile, only a few times tho!

Yeah true, he learnt not to go chasing food when he can get it pulled in front of his nose, id do exactly the same if I was him.
They are great fun to watch when they are playing too.
Funniest incident i have had with one was one day i was out in my boat in the bay fishing, dead calm quiet and no one in sight, a seal appeared about 10ft away and made a hell of a roar, i nearly 5hit myself!

They was along the inside from the end to the marina, but bugger all on the outside today.
Weird! Although I did see people catching them on float way back in the marina once, then feeding them to the seal.
Damn thing was just next to them with it’s mouth open like a dustbin!
They’d reel in a mac or gar, unhook it, drop it in the bottomless pit, then cast out again ?

They have well cottoned on to anglers that will feed them. They have got that clever that they look to see what your doing, if your just standing still holding your rod, they move on but if your working a lure or feathers they will sit and wait!
when the fish are in ive even had the from the slipway there.

Unlucky with the seal, they drive me nuts at Brixham, how something so huge and seemingly fat can move so fast is one of life’s mysteries!!

enjoyed the read, almost felt like I was there and getting just as pissed off with that seal as you! ... thanks for posting, hope your efforts are rewarded next time out

Nice one Bob! Sounds like that Seal had you well figured out! ????

Unlucky with the seal.
Great report though ?
