I decided to target rays this week for my hunt with another tiddler trip fitted in Thursday while the misses was out for the day ?
The Monday trip to minehead was put off due to high winds, and instead I had a couple of hours local for a hound/thorny.
A very slow trip, but I did manage a 6lb Thorny and a strap to save the blank.
Tuesday we were on the mark early at Minehead, and after the tide dropped a bit got the baits out.
Target was SE and spotted, and if very lucky maybe a blonde.
All I hoped was that the dogs stayed away, as they can be a nightmare!
The sun was out and it was boiling, wind very light, and zero bites till near low, when I had the first welcome spotted of the trip ?
My mate then had a few rays on the start of the flood, with my tips staying still!
I think he may have been casting a tad further, so as we were now on the sand, I swapped a reel with 24lb line for one with 14lb!!.....this was a brand new fathom 12 I'd just had magged for Chesil, and had taken just for a couple of test casts.
This cast further, so rather than just a few test casts, I put a bait out ?
Bang off it went, then again, and again, and in fact I had 5 more rays to the distance reel, and just a single dog to the normal channel setup!
Unfortunately 14lb line just isn't strong enough for the channel, and I was very lucky not to lose any gear!
The final tally was 4 spotted and 2 SE each.... 12 rays in total, with my dog giving me the honours ?
Cheers Si.
