I was out in a friend's boat for what was probably the last bream fishing excursion of the year today. There may be another chance in a few days but I am resigned to it being the end of the season for catching my favourite species. I have added a lot more information and experience to the process this year, particularly around the timing and state of the tide, location, ground and depth, pertinent to this area of course. One thing that has not changed all season is that a squid strip on a size 4 nailed to the bottom is my prefered offering.
I tried a new rig design today, a wishbone with a spreader bar to keep the baits away from each other a bit. It worked well and only tangled badly once, I think because the weights I'd put on the hooklengths were a bit too far from the hooks.
Today was 6 bream, 3 returned, and 6 doggies between us. Not a fantastic result numbers wise but a decent trip nonetheless.
On my last two trips I have been using two Leeda MPR Quiver tip rods that I have recently acquired, one second hand and one brand new.
Bite detection is very good and the soft tip allows the fish to pick up a bait and get it in its mouth without feeling much resistance.
I think this results in more fish in the boat. I really like them.
I'm looking forward to connecting with a 10lb smut on them next year.
Overall the bream fishing was very good this year but the weather beat me rather too often.
Lots of smoothounds and a few other species thrown in over the season to add variety made it a memorable summer, still going in early November.
Still awaiting a gilthead, better weather might have seen me travelling further up the coast to a well known gilt mark but sadly time, weather and tide didn't align this year.
On the plus side the one I didn't catch this year will be bigger next , every cloud.....
Winter species now more likely, we'll even try for a codling or two, maybe some decent channel whiting and the inevitable doggies and straps.
