So today was the annual jolly boy’s boat trip at Lyme Regis (Margate was too far).
It was @Tatunka joe myself, @Ollieollie , @Christurner , @Jonnylongshanks , @BlackLugsMatter , @Stone and Tat’s mate Si.
After meeting up at the car park we’ll all trooped down the Cobb (Lyme harbour wall) to climb aboard Pegasus skippered by Lewis Hodder.
The target was of course black bream and hopes were high for a decent trip - I mean, there’s loads of bream about in august isn’t there?
Isn’t there?
Getting ready on the way out.
At the first mark we had bites from the off, the expected reef species of colourful cuckoo wrasse, brown bream (pout), spotted bream (dogs), slimy bream (conger), but no black breams.
All credit to Lewis, he didn’t make us suffer long but moved along to the next mark.
It was a bit more of the same but there were mackerel there too and boy, some really chunky ones.
Chris finally pulled out the target, a black bream that was a little small to keep, but it gave us hope.
We moved on again and encountered more mackerel, along with about three bream at low water, including a better one for Tat.
Discussing tactics…
Rich went all out for a monster conger and indeed he caught an impressive, not quite strap, specimen…
It was still a bit slow though and Lewis kept trying.
He moved again and for awhile it was dead. I put out a big squid bait thinking ray or huss and managed to lose two heavier fish (perhaps eels?) that couldn’t seem to swallow it down.
Then Chris T had a bream and at least we knew they were there.
Ironically my whole squid bait was getting pecked to death by bream (?), so swapped back to smaller baits and they promptly ignored me.
In the end a few started coming to the boat. I had two, Chris T had three I think, Tat had three, Si had one or two as well.
We stayed there for the last couple of hours and it was all a bit slow I admit, broken up with exciting bonus finger finger sized pout and spotted bream.
But the skipper had covered all the likely bases and I’m not sure what else he could have done.
All in all though a good day and the weather was kind to us, and we certainly tried!
