My last one (and current one) is a DB1 that was bought at least 10 years ago as a Christmas present and I’ve had zero issues with it, but I haven’t seen the very latest versions apart from your post.
So yes I’d imagine it’s corner cutting.

Ian is sadly no longer with us but I believe when it was his company he was quite passionate about quality control.

I think also when he first brought the tripod out it stood head and shoulders above others on the market but several models have been introduced since then.
