First morning of the New Year and a cold one. Light covering of snow, iced over van and minus temps!
Kill or cure as l have had the dreaded man flu over Christmas.
Just fitted a diesel heater to my van, so turned it on, directed the duct at my fishing suit and retreated to the house for tea and toast!
Venue (Southampton water) is local, under 10 miles from home and l can see the van from my spot. Target flounder or anything else for my species hunt. 38 last year and wanted 40, but all considered (enough said!) was quite pleased.
Set up 3 hook flappers long shank size 4 and 6 hooks, one with pop ups one without. One with old rag l did not use as l was ill, and new rag on the other. Fishing the tide up and waiting for the water to come to me as there is a heavy mud bank stopping me from getting closer.
Heavy mist on the water and the sound of fog horns from the still busy shipping. Very atmospheric and only spoilt by the cold air making me cough like a barsteward!
Second cast retrieval for a bait change and almost hidden in the worm remnants was a tiny fish. I recognised it as the last species l caught last year, which was also my first of that species, a sand Goby. Well that is number one and one that previously, had been hard to find!
Picture taken and back to it. Nothing much happening and expecting some small bass, but none showed. Then a bite, then another, sit on your haaannds, bite and take it. The fish could be felt and stayed as deep as it could. It tryed to stay on the bottom and went to the base of the mud bank in front if me. It was only when l lifted it over, that l could see my target fish, a nice and plump little flounder. It had dull orange spots, but they can have them.
Well pleased and my second species in the morning on day one of the new year.
It was pretty quiet after that so l packed up. A nice little 3 hour session with 2 less than common fish to start the year
Hope you all have a good first session.
