Took the boys to a south Devon estuary today to try and get them a gilt, well despite good bait as ever from SW Seabaits, we drew a blank on gilts. I am blaming the water being weirdly coloured despite no rain, numpty paddle boarders and the hoards of tiny schoolies demolishing baits within seconds of hitting the bottom. The boys enjoyed catching, but, disappointed to not catch a gilt after all the bigging up I had given the species?
Whilst the day was all about them, I did sneak in my lure rod to try and tempt a bass on a surface lure. Around low the colour dropped out of the water and I gave it a go, to say it was slow was an understatement, but, did manage to get one in the end. What was weird was as the tide pushed the “piranhas“ started to hit the boys baits, so I thought I would bounce a variety of small soft plastic paddle tail through the same zone the boys were fishing. absolutely not one hit, no interest at all, I tried every retrieve possible and positioned myself in between my boys so I was in the right zone, but, nothing! Any hints and tips on why I couldn’t get a touch on the soft plastics would be much appreciate.
