Wot benifit is it to fish reel down on a fixed spool rod does it help with power when casting asking cause I’ve just acquired a pair of gbfs rods and wondering if I’m missing a trick ref distance by not fishing them reel down any advice whould be great cheers

I'm no expert having only recently moved across to sea fishing, but am a competent caster with freshwater gear, including big carloads and feeders.

As part of experimenting with my new beach gear I had a practice session reel down. Now having never cast a multiplier or used my thumb to release line, I suspected it would be very odd. In fact, it was quite enjoyable and increased my distance, using an OTG cast. Just felt that rod was easier to punch and pull as the weight of the reel was low.

I haven't fished like that yet but that's the trade off I suspect. Winding in wasn't as comfortable reel down. It also means your reels re closer to the beach and sand , so you need to be careful. When i went back to conventional reel placement I wasn't sure if distance dropped, so maybe it was just that my casting is improving each trip.

I would give it a try. It might take some getting used to, but might help casting.

In reality how much distance would you gain from it??? I've been given a rod rung for fixed or multis and it has coasters.

multi down Is quite nice to use as said makes the rod bend thoroughly for those that may be struggling to compress a big casting rod wit the reel up ..
but fixed spool reel down looks like a right pain in terms of gripping the line for the cast ...??
personally after experimenting I found reel up better all round

I find it easy enough gripping and releasing for the cast. A breakaway thumbutton or one of Poledarks. I don't like the breakaway trigger though. I tend not to fish many marks that require big distances though and mostly fish reel up as it is more user friendly. I'\/e dunked my reels in too much mud or water and bashed them on rocks. I suppose it's not too bad down south where you just plonk your arse on the shingle all session though

ahh yeah forgot about the issue of reels in the sand when using down ...

and I might get a poledark trigger to have a play with they look good for big weights and bait with no movement from your finger trapping line...suppose makes the whole cast feel more 'solid' ?

Yeah the lad I got my gbfs from bought the mk2 version and they come with a reducer cause the guys up east said same sort of thing reels sitting in mud and alike so this will stop that

Fixed spool down, Cannon setup for index finger release is my preference. With multipliers I used to find I got a better grip on the spool plus spreading your line across the spool on retrieve was better for me. Lighter rods for surf fishing then reel up keeps it clear of the wet stuff.
Just make sure if fishing reel down that the reel handle clears all that bulky clothing.

Bulky clothing I’ll have you know I wear latex when fishing ???
