A similar'ish parallel can be drawn with shotguns for target shooting. A good shot will be able to hit a target with nigh on any shotgun but you rarely see a top shot using a cheap gun, although some do. I am not a great shot not bad but not great. I still use a great gun though because it is lovely to use and own... although expensive a Perazzi will last the buyer a lifetime... cartridges only go bang once and are the most costly and essential item in shooting even cheap ones. I am sure there must be similar items in fishing gear.
