Having just about survived the excitement of last week’s session , I wasn’t exactly desperate to get back out there again but Thursday wouldn’t be the same without a bit of fishing. Choice of venue was easy and by 7pm, I was down to my local beach again. After fishing up to and over high last week, the tide was ebbing this time, and with low water at 11, I decided to fish a different spot from where I would be able to cast into a deeper gulley, which I hoped would hold some bigger fish. With a fresh wind blowing, there was a very fishy looking surf running and against my better judgement I was feeling quite optimistic.
My choice of tactics was the same as last week, with a 2 hook flapper on one rod and a pulley dropper on the other and as well lug, sandeel and squid again, I also brought some razors and mackerel this time for a bit of variety.
Despite the promising conditions, the first 3 hours was slow, with the baits coming back completely un-molested, and though I could have scaled down as I did last week and maybe found a rockling or two, I decided to stick with the bigger baits in the hope of a bigger fish. Eventually, 30 minutes before low water I finally spotted a small bite, a single small tap which stood out against the rhythmic movements of the rod tip in time to the waves and I hoped that this was the precursor to a proper big fish bite. That was wishful thinking though and nothing else materialized so I gave it another 5 minutes before reeling in. I wasn’t expecting anything, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I’d actually beaten the blank with a small whiting .
With low water not far away I hoped that this was just the start, but I was to be disappointed and despite gambling with a whiting fillet on the dropper for the last 40 minutes, in the hope that there might be something about which likes munching on smaller fish, I didn’t get another bite and I packed in just after midnight.
So my hopes of something a little more exciting than a rat or slug had been thwarted once more, but on the plus side at least I’m fishing and I’ve yet to blank in 2021, so I guess I should be grateful for small mercies .
