Hi all! I’m away on hols at Paignton with the family. I hadn’t expected to get any fishing in at all so I’m completely unprepared but…..
It looks like I might get a little window tomorrow night (Tuesday) into early Wednesday morning. Here’s what I’m dealing with;

• I only have a 12’ telescopic rod with me but the rest of my gear is ok. (I also have a spinning set up with me)
• I need to source bait (probably at Torquay) but what? (Was thinking squid, rag, maybe mack)
• I’m not interested in targeting mackerel or small species!
• I was looking at Hopes Nose but reading reports/ reviews etc, I’ve been quite put off!! Or should I still consider it?
• I’d love to catch a Huss, been on the wish list for years!
• It’s a neap tide with light W winds forecast

Based on the above, can anyone recommend any suggestions? Tactics? Advice?
I was maybe looking at Berry Head or the Breakwater at Brixham too.
Absolutely any advice is welcome as I’m only going to get one shot at this. My wife is super awesome for letting me!!!
I’m basically interested in catching anything that isn’t commonly caught in Kent.

Many thanks in advance folks (I appreciate 24hrs is not a lot of time for responses to this but I promise to put up a report ?)

Huss are possible at meadfoot beach and haldon pier torquay i would imagine . Theres a few good bait shops around euro angling is one . Hopes nose will be full of fluff chucking scum and berry head may not be much better unfortunately. Not sure about the breakwater that could be worth ago . Hopefully some one else will help you out and put you on the fish . Good luck

Thanks so much! Euro angling was already on the radar. I’ll look into Meadfoot. ????

Have no knowledge of the area. From memory bull huss aren't particularly bait fussy, will take fish baits, worms, crabs, prawns, squid. Did read an article that suggested cuttlefish was a great bait if you can get your paws on some.

Never found the breakwater much good at night, although only fished there once after dark. Pout infested. :(
Should be some eels about if they’re your thing.

Never fished it but otherwise Berry ahead after dark could throw up huss, I would have thought?
Not been in years but by all accounts I think I’d avoid Hopes Nose in case the scum bag camps are there.

A bit further away but I believe the mouth of the Dart at Dartmouth (!) lol n the rocks to the right is supposed to be a good huss spot.
Seen it from the boat and people clearly fish there as you can see the paths down. But how to get there/what access is like, I really don’t know.

People talk about the castle and looks like you can drive pretty close, but I’m not 100% sure if that’s what I’ve looked at from the boat

Does look like there’s a few potential rock marks along there.
Maybe more than you want to be searching for on a quick sesh though?

I think Berry Head in the evening/after dark would be your best bet. Might pick up some fresh mackerel before the light fails (for bait).

Generally a good sized mackerel bait is best for huss but squid works too and as said, they’re not particularly fussy. Can’t really go wrong with fish baits though.

Places for bait, as others have said, euroangling at the top of town, also Hookz in torquay harbour, preston hardware bait and tackle in paignton and brixham bait and tackle.

High tide is 2pm then 2.30am
Low tide 7.50pm then 8.40am

winds are wnw-w lightish

few places to think about
Teignmouth beaches around the mouth the river for bass, sandeels can be bought from the back beach. free parking after 6pm
ness beach shaldon, easy beach to park and fish, wrasse gurnards, bass, hounds, dogfish and possible huss in the rocky bits.free parking after 6pm
forget hopes nose tho if your fishing at night should be a bit better as most people will be in their tents getting drunk or gone back to their mini vans.
meadfoot beach, wrasse small conger bass chance of a huss in the rough stuff, can be very snaggy, free parking
haldon pier, wrasse, conger small chance of a huss, can be a bit tackle hungry at times, £3.80 parking all night
princess pier, sandy bottom, mostly small stuff tho can get odd nice fish, busy with fluffers, £3.80 parking all night
the beaches from torquay round to paignton, small stuff mostly, bass gurnards £3.80 parking all night I think?
breakwater, wrasse, pouting, pollock conger odd chance of a huss, snaggy bottom £3.80 parking all night
Berryhead, wrasse pouting, conger, odd dogfish odd huss, odd flatty, long walk down and up, not sure parking charges.
Sharkham point, wrasse, odd ray ,conger, huss, dogfish pouting, snaggy bottom, bit hard to find, free parking.
dartmouth castle, congers, dogfish huss, fairly sandy ogg nice snag, theres now a charge for parking but dont how much.

let me know if you want a bit more detailed info on some the places.

Very hard to say which spot is going to give you lots a fish or any fish really.
if I was to stick me neck out and say where to go, ness beach as few more species there including hounds , breakwater chance of any thing here, tho not been fishing great, berryhead, not fished this in the dark for years but always a chance of a good fish or sharkham point, as does have huss there( ill can try to explain how to get to this).
Hope this helps a bit

Superb! Thank you so much. I think I’m leaning towards Berry Head or Sharkham point.
Not too fussed about hounds as they’re my staple target in Kent, I want to catch something different from home ideally.
Probably going to be fishing from about 9-10pm until the small hours so should make it to high water.
I think I’ll just get a pack of mackerel and a pack of squid for bait and see what happens!

Glad Tat remembered!

What the guys in Norfolk did when they introduced night parking charges!!!
£1 coins???
Super glue into both sides ?, allow to cool, slot into machine, wait for around 5 minutes.
For some unknown reason??? The coin is stuck????
Unable to purchase a parking ticket ????, so parking is FREE

Good luck Stormzy! Look forward to a report. Glad Bananas gave you a shout - he's No. 1 in that area! As others have said, I would avoid Hope's Nose due to the foreign fluff chuckers, and Berry head isn't much better, plus it's a fair old hike. More reports in the local rag about Hope's Nose today:
