I'm fitting a 12v Diesel heater inside my boat, it will going inside one of the lockers outside the cabin, the problem I have is there is only about 12" from the exhaust outlet on the heater to the Thru Hull exhaust outlet on the side of the boat.

So do I have to have a silencer or can I run a pipe straight from the heater to the exhaust outlet.

I saw your post on the dark side Steve. No experience of such things, but it did cross my mind as to how high is the heater in relation to the waterline? Last think you want is a wave or bit of water current shooting a jet of water back up the exhaust.
I guess the only way to decided on a silencer is to install it without, and run it for a while to see what the noise levels are.
I know the Eberspatcher ones in the trucks I used to drive were quite quiet inside, but a bit louder outside where the exhaust exited.

I may be able to get the heater a few inches higher than the exhaust outlet, but I want to keep the outlet as high above the waterline as possible and several of the guys in the marina say they don't have a silencer with their heater setup, but as you say, I will have to run it and see how it goes.
