A day on Swanage Pier started with a late drive down the previous evening and a night in the van. Switched the heater on before getting up and enjoyed the views out of the side window, before getting dressed and having a short walk along the front as the sun rose. I love Swanage.
Moved the van to Broad Street car park paid my one pound for 24 hours parking and set about making beans on toast for my breakfast which l ate looking at the views over the pier and Old Harry Rocks. Bliss!
The lower level of the pier is shut for the winter. Usual small hooks and small baits dropped into the water. I did not have to wait long and a nice bite is showing and putting a good bend in my spinning rod. I can tell from the line angle that it is running under the pier, which is not ideal, but it was not to difficult to get out. Up onto the pier comes a bailons wrasse. A fairly rare fish and a nice one at that, and l know that others want one! I have had a few already, so nothing to add to my hunt. Haddock turned up and cursed me! Nothing else, so a very quiet session for there. Curse of the first cast applied!
A day later an afternoon trip to West Bay meeting Haddock. Main target was a coal fish.
A rare picture of the enigma that is Haddock and as he says, how he is best viewed.
One rod out and busy baiting the second. Haddock says, you got a bite. Then jumps on the opportunity to ask me how l would get on if we wasn't there to watch my rods and generally take the banter level up a few notches, ha, ha. Picked the rod up and oowh, something small, but spirited. Up over the pier rail and yes it's a coal fish. Double check the lateral line and lower jaw and yes again, happy with that and did a little dance! Number 22!
Now is that the curse of the first cast again? Nope a fairly busy session.
A good mixed bag.
Lots of Pollack.
A flounder.
A surprise bass.
So 6 species caught. Coal fish, whiting, pouting, pollack flounder and bass. The coal fish and bass gave me numbers 22 and 23 for the species hunt so happy with that. Fairly busy night for both of us
Left about 9 as the wind was getting up and there was raining coming along the coast.
Off to Swansea soon to see my eldest so need to plan some targets for that area. Any suggestions most welcome.
Good luck all.
