West Wales COD & WHITING

I do a bit in the haven, hobs point always popular, also hakin point (sea wall by milford marina to the right of locks entrance). neyland yacht club and neyland point(where the sea wall turns left towards neyland marina). not been out yet myself so can't comment on any fish about but should be by now.

Cod ? What are they?

once upon a time an old old angler described to me a vision of a supposedly once plentiful fish fabled for its appetite and having a lovely white tasty flesh, myself I think he must have been pished as a rat and hallucinating but one day such a thing may appear from the depths , one can only hope. as per my wsf name I am ever optimistic;)

An old and wisened angler, I thought you were suggesting @Pigtin , but one could never think of one as great as him as being pisshed as a rat.
Not someone who has actually caught a bass from Hampton pier.

It's known as the pier of broken dreams.
An area devoid of fish.
In all the years that humans have fished it, I think 3 fish have been caught!

I was a very small one.

Wow, sounds like a great place, what has happen that not much is being caught from there

The cables from the wind farm come in alongside the jetty. Don't know if that affects it but I don't think it ever has been that good. It's surprising because it looks perfect.

Hi. regarding Hakin point , just been looking at Google earth , do you actually fish of the jetty / pier I can see or from the beach ?

hi voodoo
of the pier on the right if not occupied or of the wall between the pier and the marina entrance.
Thanks for the info. I have fished off the wall by Mackerel Quay before . When we head that way I'll make sure we have time to recce other spots

Well , along with my new 72 year old novice sea angling buddy we headed west yesterday . A brief recce of one suggested mark, Hakin Point , which looks worth another a visit but as there is a warning sign displayed saying it is liable to flooding at HW on spring tides and yesterday fitted the bill ;13.2 mtrs on the Llanelli scale ,that's huge , I decided to fish from the Mackerel Quay area. Managed to set up very close to the car at my desired point . Plenty of room for two anglers and four rods between us. First hour was spent doing some casting practice and how to bait up using a whole range of fishy baits and frozen blacks . All four rods were cast out and as it got dark and the tide rose expectations were high. Not to much trouble with weed and our 4oz pyramid leads were holding well , which surprised me as I was expecting to having to use grip leads in the big tide. For a couple of hours the only thing interested in our baits were the bloody crabs  My buddy also learnt that he needs to check his knots better as he lost a couple of hooks and knot failure was indicated by the twirly bit of nylon on the end of his snood. We used the waiting time to prepare our baited traces so no fishing time was wasted. My buddy was using my bass rod , as his second rod , but he'd left his spare tip light at home , however the bite indicated by a surprise decent sized grey gurnard didn't need a light to see it.:) This proved to be the only fish of the session. However a decent session with lots learnt and put into practice it certainly wasn't a wasted trip.
Covid permitting we'll be heading west again hopefully when it gets a bit colder and pesky bait robbing crabs have buggered off.
