So after coming home early from work a friend Shane messaged me saying hes keen to get on the shingle for an overnight session. I completely agreed but had to wait until 2 for my lug beds to dry out a bit. I was surprised at how easy the lug was to dig after the easterlies weve had but managed a good couple of lb in about an hr. i planned to meet him there at 4 —- traffic —— stupid 3 cylinder drivers — some one also had the idea to do road works for 3 months on the only entry and exit to where i live. I met him there at about 6 pm. He had already caught a few macks so that was a good sign. We setup and the rules were no light on the water and 15min bait soaks. He asked what would i be targeting and i said im looking for the grand slam and need an undulate….
I did some easy math and he said he had been feathering for an hour and caught 3 so i thought ill stick with it for 20mins to get my one for bait. Well within 30mins i had 4. The evening was flat calm with a silk to the water surface. The bait fish could be seen quite close as they were targeted by predators of the deep. We did a little bit of a casting session to where i managed to bed my 2 7ht’s in after full rebuilds for the cod season and shane managed to find out how to extend the time the rod was loaded with good results. So i opted for a bit of a summer rig and a winter rig to see what becomes of each. The up and over i use is very simple but i like to use gemini snap links for the weight slider and also about 5-6 beads to hold the snood away from the lead and also the obligatory pulley pennel about 2 foot long. I was using the eagle claw trokar hooks If you havent seen them please look them up. The hook point is machined into 3 sides and each side produced an edge like blade, they dont puncture they slice! Also they are semi circle and dont blunt up so quickly like our normal j hooks on the shingle. I find if im using sakumas or cox and rawle im changing hooks quite frequently for them to be top of there game, theres no point sitting on a bait at full distance if the hooks are not sharp.
any way i cut a side off a sort of alive mack and then halved it long ways and i used the belly part first on the up and over. Fresh fresh mack is quite hardy and i dont use bait elastic when its straight out of the packet as it were. This was just nicked 3 times and just pulled up over the hook shank just enough to grasp it with the top hook- i like to have at least 3 1/4 of the bait flappy. This was sent out in a reasonable manner.
the pulley had one of my fresh dug worm that were mostly yellow tails on and hit to oblivion.
By this time i was able to pour a flask and put some Metallica on the bluetooth speaker absolutely flat out and soke up the good vibes.
as shane walked over after setting up i had a little drop back and stood up. We were just speaking then my line changed direction and tightened up in the tide. So i did the winding in thing! A fish of some good size surfaced quite far out. I was wondering what the hell? I knew it felt like a ray but this thing acted a little different.
Shane grabbed the leader and slid up a nice undulate around the 8-9lb mark. Well i said i can go home now!
so after some pics and putting the fish back nicely i thought i better check the worm bait. Well that was the start of the bream game !
As night drew in the pests (straps) were on form! I hate it when its like that to the point where you just feel like cutting the line at the reel and just packing up. I persevered until i had there bigger sister into double numbers and decided id had enough and retired to sleep.
Shane managed to have a few fish through dark but we had lost all our mojo after baits and rigs being wrecked by twisting inferior animals that should belong in hell - snotty horrid things.
i drove straight from the beach to work and then was home by 11am.
its a hard life - do i do it all over again tonight?
