Hi all.
I hope everyone is well, and doing a better job escaping Covid than I have this year.
In between 2 bouts of Rona and laryngitis, I have been fishing a few times.
Most recently, a trip to Sandbanks saw me wangle out a small plaice, before a similar result at Hengistbury Head the following weekend.
Ben and I had yesterday in the calendar for some time, it has become a yearly ritual to hit Chesil early April for a ray/plaice sesh.
Last year saw 3 rays and a couple of plaice so we had high hopes.
We both arrived at midday ish and were pleased to see some clear water at around the 150 yard mark.
Unfortunately, after a couple of casts, the turn of the tide dispersed the chalky brown water until it was twice as far out as we could cast.
I kept one plaice rig out all day but I knew deep down that my chances of a plaice were fairly slim.
The swell picked up quite a bit towards sunset when we turned our attention to rays.
My casts had reduced by about 20 yards, where I had receded with the tide, and this put me directly on a clay patch.
Over the next 2 hours I managed to land 2 small eyed rays and 1 undulate, all to mackerel baits.
Ben, eventually getting fed up with taking my fish pics, opted to chuck a double squid bait in the gutter, and after a short wait, joined the party with this beauty of a bass, weighing in at 7lbs. We both agreed that later in the year it would have definitely have been a double.
Chesil produces yet again Oh and the title is a joke
Total count was:
8+ dogs
1 smoothie
1 eel
2 small eyed rays
1 undulate ray
2 whiting
1 bass
