So, I took the family on a two day trip down to Brixham... Not just so I could go fishing honest. Thankfully both my kids love fishing so taking them for 2 sessions off Brixham breakwater , both mornings was a good way to get my fishing fix and brownie points with the wife.
The first morning on the break water was spent with the kids taking turns fishing mackeral strip under a float set at 10foot and me throwing out a majorcraft jigpara slow metal. We all had plenty of mackeral which was great fun on light tackle. All went back as no fridge at the hotel. Sadly the other two fishers out there were keeping all the mackeral they caught regardless of size soon filling up two bin bags.... I did have a word with them towards the end. The were both Eastern European and claimed not to know about size limits. To be fair to them after my chat all the tiddlers were put back safe and well. I ended up snagging the jigpara and losing it at £6.49 not a cheap lure.
The next day I purchased replacement metal jigs at Brixham tackle, a lovely little tackle shop with a friendly and helpful owner. I bought some cheap metal at 4 for a fiver and proceeded to catch more often than the day before. Roughly a fish every other cast. I won't be buying expensive jigs no more. I put the kids on a dexter wedge to keep them more active in the cold. We ended up catching plenty of mackeral, pin whiting and pollock. The kids enjoyed seeing the resident seals. I will Definitely be arranging another trip there as don't know anywhere closer to me in Warminster where I can get mackeral in winter, superb fun. Took home 3 to eat, delicious.
Next time I will have to take some ragworm to see what else is hanging around. The rocks nearby scream wrasse to me.
