Hi all! Well, it’s been a busy bank holiday weekend starting with a boat comp on Sunday.
My dad and I headed out of Herne Bay for a club pairs comp, individual results are recorded for the championship points but the trophy is won by the combined weight of the pairs fishing.
We had a cracking day in the end and although no leviathans were caught, we had a good mixed bag of hounds to around 5lbs, whiting, dogs, dabs, a 7lbs thornback and my dad had a beast of a pouting of around 1.5lbs!!
He also landed the ray in the last 20mins and beat me by about 5lbs overall, stealing the win! We won the trophy with a combined weight of around 86lbs, coming 1st and 2nd individually.
That evening, I decided to hit the shingle for a quiet solo beach session in the hope the bigger hounds were moving in in darkness.
Not the case at all, in fact I didn’t have a sniff of a hound bite all evening. The session wasn’t a complete write off however as the clear water paved the way for a couple of bass to show.
My first was a schoolie of 32cm shortly followed by a missed bite of similar quality.
Things were quiet indeed. Around 1am though, I had a small quiver on the rod tip which I assumed to be a whiting or maybe a small bass. I picked the rod up gently and as I raised the tip to feel the bite, it simply folded over!! The bite was so strong but I knew it wasn’t a hound, it was too fast.
After the initial pull, I could feel the fish was still on but it was swimming towards me, I was winding like a thing possessed to try and catch it up and maintain tension. Eventually, the fish tried to turn away as it got within 15yds of the shore and a great little scrap ensued. Before long though, I managed to slide the fish up the shingle and I was adamant it was a new pb. The bass was very plump and looked huge!
After careful unhooking and a couple of pics, I measured it at 62cm and it went 5lbs 9oz, 3oz up on my previous best!
I was a little disappointed it wasn’t heavier as it certainly looked it but still pleased as punch to get a new PB.
Nothing of note happened for the rest of the night and I packed up about 2:30am.
The following day, I arranged with my dad to take the kids out for their first ever boating experience. The sea was like a mill pond, perfect conditions for them. We were only out a couple of hours but they both thoroughly enjoyed it with dogs and whiting keeping their interest. My daughter had a small dab and my son a hound pup too, they were made up.
Both of them also had absolute screaming bites from assumably much bigger hounds but unfortunately both were short lived and got away. My daughters snapped a 4/0 hook!!!
They both really enjoyed it overall though, even if it was a little stressful for me keeping an eye on them both!
An exhausting but enjoyable weekend overall, I’ll be out targeting the shore hounds for my next adventures.
