Not the best tides to be out last night but the wife had a friend over so who was I to argue.
I had half a bucket of hardbacks already but after my success with lug earlier in the week, I thought I might as well go and dig a few whilst I waited for the water.
Armed with my crabs and 20 big ol’ snakes, I headed to my chosen spot and got set up just as the water started to hit the stones. Out went a lug and within 5 minutes, a decent pull resulted in a 41cm bass. I’d not even got the other rod cast out yet!
Both were sent out again and it wasn’t long before the lug rod went slack, winding down and it felt like a better bass on… it was! At 46cm and 2lbs exactly.
Another half hour or so and again, it was the lug that was to produce, bass no.3 was a schoolie at 37cm but enough to keep me occupied whilst the crab rod stayed motionless.
Weed was proving to be difficult, especially at my maximum range so I dropped both rods a little closer and this seemed to do the trick on the most part.
Things had quietened a bit. Minor, occasional knocks on the lug aside, nothing was happening, the same crab kept getting brought in and thrown back out still alive (I think it was getting a bit angry about it!!)
As high tide approached, with maybe an hour to go, I had a small nod on the lug that looked promising. I picked the rod up carefully to feel for the fish and it simply took off, this was no bass!!
The runs this fish were making were unreal, I knew I was into a good double. It seemed to take a lifetime to get it near the shore but eventually I got some leader onto the reel when the fish decided it was having none of it and proceeded to tear line off again as it headed for the horizon. I eventually got it close enough to get in the water behind it, it thrashed around and gave me a good soaking but I managed to land it in the end.
One of the hardest hitting hounds I’ve had and my biggest this year at 13lbs 1oz, I was actually surprised it wasn’t bigger. On unhooking it, I realised it had nearly straightened my hook! ?
I fished on with one more bass on the lug, another schoolie at 37cm again.
As the tide turned, the sun had all but come up and the weed was back with a vengeance. Time to cut my losses and retreat.
Glad I dug those lug worm though!!
