Hi All,

Asking as I don't use fixed spool myself but a friend is just getting into fishing and has asked me for my advice but I don't have a clue when in comes to fixed spool reels so any input would be great please ... max budget around £100 but obviously cheaper would be great, needs to handle hounds, rays etc

Thanks

Tommy

Penn Surfblaster II....you can pick them up used from ebay for 80 quid upwards. Excellent reel that will handle anything around our shores. I picked up a couple as part of a lot on ebay..used to use 40 to quid reels..this is WAY better.

Or he can buy my Nomura 7500sw on ebay at he moment.....?

£100 for me wouldn't be a surfblaster MK2, they used to be able to be had for £70, for the money they do have excellent line lay.
But, they are no good for rough ground. The spool wobbles all over the shop under load. You have to pump and wind, so any mixed ground or rough ground marks when need a fish cranking in over the rough is a no go. They aren't that light either considering.

I'd look at Penn battle 3 if in budget. Or battle 2 if not. They do a long cast model if you dont mind a plastic body over a metal one. But they are tough reels, my mate has the battle II long cast and they survive our Bristol channel abuse well.

A bit extra on the budget (£140 to £150) gets you a spinfisher vi long cast, tough reel with a metal body. Also good waterproofing against sea water.

Daiwa BG another good option for the heavy duty end of the scale and should be around £100.

Or Shimano Aerlex 10000, with a discount code can on occasion be had for £63, otherwise £70.

Used to be able to get the Shimano Ultegra for £100, no more though thanks to covid and stock levels being awful for everything.

Plenty to choose from :p

There's alot to choose from on the market really, but look carefully as some of them are all marketing hype and not that great in reality.

@bacon had pretty much summed it up really.

What ground will it be used over? Clean beaches, mixed ground, rough? That will also play a part in which reel to go for.

Bacon has covered it well above but for under a £100 it has got to be the Shimano Arelex will handle everything you ask of it. Tkop

Heavy reels though.

ABU Cardinal 176 swi was recommended to me ( Fishlocker does a video on them). It has survived a number of sea water dunkings whilst on Kayak.
I have a 174 swi never had a problem with it for mullet and lure fishing, still prefer Multies for bait fishing.

Thanks for the input fellas it's much appreciated, it's for mainly clean ground ... I'll get him to look at the ones mentioned so far to

Another thing you could do is check out your local Gumtree site for good 2nd hand gear. I picked up an immaculate Surfblaster II just before Christmas for £30!

Black version for a tenner less
