With a deep depression due to hit on Thursday, bringing potentially gale force winds and heavy rain, there was no time to lose if I wanted to fit in my usual 2 lure fishing sessions this week. A quick scan of the weather on Monday morning showed that Tuesday and Wednesday were my best bets, so my plans were hatched. After fishing the same mark a few times lately, I fancied a change of scenery and though the last visit to my chosen mark had resulted in a blank, I hoped that being several weeks later the bass would have arrived there in numbers by now .

Conditions were ok when I arrived but the fresh cross-wind, blowing directly along the shore was a pain. It was forecast to ease later though and so I carried on regardless, but the next 2 hours were completely uneventful. Despite the lack of action, as sunset drew near the wind did in fact ease and by the time darkness descended, conditions were flat calm giving my confidence a huge boost :giggle:.

As the light levels dropped all manner of life began to stir, this included a welcome return of the North Wales sea trout aerial display team, way out in the main flow. Nearer the shore I was joined by a school of small pollack, which chased a shoal of sandeel around directly in front of me, but no matter which lure I tried, I couldn’t tempt anything to have a go at my offerings .

By the time midnight approached, another 3 hours later, I hadn’t experienced a single take and I was rapidly running out of motivation. With another session less than 24 hours later, and not wanting to waste my time and energy when there was obviously nothing around, I decided to give it another 10 minutes, and in a last desperate throw of the dice I clipped on a white Wave Worm, complete with a rattle inserted in the tail.

More in hope than expectation I went through the motions, and as the clock ticked by into the last few minutes of my evening I was distracted by the sight of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites moving across the starlit sky. After missing them on numerous occasions I was chuffed to finally see them but then without warning, I was shocked back to the fishing by a sharp tap on my line!

Now it’s been quite a long time since I last caught on the Wave Worm, so initially I wasn’t quite sure what to do next :ROFLMAO:. I only had a split second to do anything and so I instinctively paused my retrieve, this seemed to do the trick and in the blink of an eye something smashed my lure and the rod took on a satisfying curve. The next couple of minutes were a tense affair, as the reality hit home that this was my one and only chance to beat the blank, and with my heart in my mouth I carefully played the fish. It wasn’t a big one, but I knew that it could throw the hook at any time, and things were complicated further by a thick bed of bladder wrack directly in front of me. I took my time though and finally, after over 5 hours of fishing without a single take I managed to guide my catch safely ashore, result!

As I released to fish to re-join his mates, I was absolutely buzzing to have got out of jail at the last minute, but of course I couldn’t possibly leave it there . 5 more casts turned into 10, which then became 20 but I couldn’t repeat the trick and so finally, 45 minutes later than planned I finally called it a night and set off for home to re-charge my batteries ready for round 2 (y).
