I was again faced with awkward tides last night, too early HW but late LW which was making my venue choice difficult.
Despite N. Kent going through a slow spell, the tide was tiny so I opted to stay fairly local and fish the ebb. I got set up pretty much dead on HW, meeting up with a couple of mates. Nothing happened for the first hour or two but it was a really nice evening to be out. As soon as darkness fell however, I noticed a distinct slack line on one of my rods, sure enough my first ray of the evening came up, a little female of 5lbs 4oz.
Shortly after, one of my mates was in to a good fish but he inexplicably lost it to a broken mainline, he was gutted as he was trying out his new T700 and it would’ve been a great way to christen the rod!
We carried on and I landed a 2nd ray, a 4lbs 8oz male. My mates had a couple of whiting but they packed up about 10:30pm as the water receeded.
Not being one to give up, I fished on and things went deftly quiet.
I had a couple of whiting to keep my interest going but it was very slow indeed. I started to wonder if there was a reason most people don’t bother with low water fishing in the area until about 40mins before low when I had a stonking pull down. Sure enough, ray no.3 came up! A better fish at 7lbs 14oz and enough to see me carry on. 10mins past low and no.4 graced me with its presence, a smaller male of 3lbs 8oz.
Despite the time being after 1am by now, I was enjoying the fishing and decided a couple more casts was worthwhile. I was right to continue, landing 2 more rays at 3lbs and 4lbs exactly. I think I could’ve had more if I had of carried on but by about 2:30am, it was time to hit the hay.
A cracking session in the end despite being very unsuspecting tides!!
