Hi all. I set out last night on the hunt for more rays but had picked up a few peelers earlier in the day thinking maybe I might winkle out an early hound.
I got to my mark and got set up managing to snap off first cast having forgotten to back the mag off. Annoyed, I sorted myself out and got to fishing again.
A couple of whiting and a solitary dogfish were keeping up interest but there were no signs of a ray. It was a perfect evening to be out and very much reminded me of those balmy, mid-summer sessions on the hounds.
As I sat back thinking exactly that, the rod with the peeler slammed over and the ratchet screamed, a sound I’ve missed since last September!
I picked it up and hooked the fish, the retrieve was a mix of lunging pulls and slack line, it wasn’t a monster but I was deliberately enjoying the fight, trying not to bully the fish too much. Before long, my first hound of the year hit the shingle, a feisty 4lbs 8oz specimen.
Absolutely made up, I fished on and over the course of the evening landed 3 more baby hounds all on crab. Meanwhile, the ray rod could only muster whiting with the big spiky dabs nowhere to be seen.
Nice to get off the mark for 2022, I so can’t wait for the big girls to show up!
