Now a member of Boscombe Pier Fishing club after years of trying. Got a key for the pier and members card with my mug on It. Had a couple of sessions recently with not much to report.
The club is for after hours which is currently after 11pm when the mere mortals get kicked off by security. Fished with @cap'nhaddock and was to meet a fishing friend Alex, but he had a 56lb stinger to complete his 6 ray grand slam (5 from the pier) a couple of days before and was knackered as he has mobility issues, due to a crushed hip. Free parking at this time of year is hard to find even at 9 at night!
The plan was to catch new species for my hunts starting with catching scad to use as fresh fish baits. It was not difficult and they came pretty much immediately and through the session with Haddock catching 3 at a time!
Whilst using worms for the scad a welcome sole came along and was returned for another day.
Haddock now has his time to gloat as he knows l am desperate for a gurnard and he lands one. Asking me if l have had one yet and giving the usual and expected banter.
He gives me the gurnard to take home and whilst sorting it, l notice one of the fish bait rods showing a bite. I tighten up but no more bites showing. Time for a bait change and l can feel something is on! As it breaks the surface l can see in the dark it is flat. The lift from the water up the pier and over the rail, always has my heart in my mouth, but a nice turbot is now sat on the deck and it gives me another species for the year.
I am unhooking the turbot and my other scad bait rod is trying to go over the rail. I always bungee them on and just as well. Bit of a slack line then a good lunge then slack then another lunge. As it comes closer in the dark my initial thought was smoothie, but it turned out to be a small conger and another fish for this hunt. Lifted out of the water and onto the deck. Back to sorting the turbot and returning it, followed by the conger. Phew a busy few minutes there!
Rebaited and chucked them back out and set too catching more scad for freezer bait. A few smoothie pups also came in.
As we got towards the top of the tide it went quiet so we called it a night at around 2. Another member who had been fishing Hengistbury Head came to see how we were Getting on, so we elected him to open the pier gate and lock it up behind us.
A decent session with 6 species between us and a turbot addition for my species hunt. The roads were clear at 2 30am, so home in 30 mins after a long haul back up the hill to my van. Happy with that.
