Hi again, well it's the end of the month, and been a dash round collecting a few last minute species!... After the specimen blondes, it was time to get back on the comp trail ?
I was trying to fit in a trip over to Bournemouth, and with a favourable wind forecast, I ordered a few quid of worm and headed over for lunchtime Wed.
Parked up and hit the gobys with sz24 hooks!!... I pulled out a sand, Common and a black, along with some bass, sandsmelt and corkwings.... No 2 spot unfortunately .... That was the 2 hr parking up, so off I headed to the main spot, looking for flat fish and a few squid.
My favoured spot was unfortunately taken, but as I walked closer, the lad on my 2nd choice was leaving.... Happy days ?
Out went fish baits... Main targets turbot, brill and undulate.
I sat down and tied some rigs, generally chatting to the other lads passing.
All quiet for a short while, then a nice bite.
I could feel a fish on, nothing big, and def not a bream or ray, ? for a Turbo I slowly wound in.
It came up.... Def a target, but which 1?
Up over the rail.... Big smiles... My first ever Brill ???.... That made the trip worthwhile already ?fab looking fish, took some pics and back it went.
Fresh baits out, and soon another little bite.... Wound down, and the flatty rod doubled over ?.... This was going to be fun on a sz 2 hook ?
The new 1-3oz rod was creaking and surprising how close you can get the tip to the butt ?.... Anyway in the running tide whatever it was, pulled back... A first for me on my occasional visits here, but slowly I gained line and sure enough eventually up came a nice blonde ray... That was a surprise, and 20ft away below it looked big to me!
Now I have a drop net, (never actually used it on a pier in tide though) and the lad next to me did the honours.
My first mistake, I should have walked the fish past loads of anglers to a downtide position to make things easier.
2nd mistake, I should have found someone that knew how to use said net, and spoke good English to understand my instructions ..... You can see where this is going ?
Net eventually went down on a tight line and floated on surface it the tide run ?... I had to convey, that we needed more line out!, and it was not possible to scoop the up tide fish out, with the tide run?
Eventually I pulled some rope from his fingers and the net drifted downtide and sunk a bit. I got the fish up and slowly drifted it towards the net.... Head in.... Fuck!!... the chap was winching the rope as fast as he could... STOP!!
Tooo late fish slid back out and went under the net and the hook hitched the bottom of it.... I knew then it was game over, but hey you have to try ?.... So a walk was then planned round the head and down to the beach.
A 2nd lad took over getting the net past obstructions, but only after a few meters, while I was feeding my rod around a post.... He just winched the net up, dangling the ray half out the water.... Then it was off and gone ?..... Speachless
Ah well... That's life I guess.
Back out went a fresh bait.
In again, a nice gurnard.
Then another gurnard... Nice.
Next I had a better fish... Much smaller but an undie this time, and wasn't sure if I could lift it with the small hooks, so this time walked it to the side to allow easier netting. I controlled things better this time, and straight in went a wee undie...
This was how things went for a few hours 6 undies, and 6 tubs!
Between these I had a few black bream and a single plaice, along with a few scad and squid on the lures.
All too soon it was kick off time
Back to the van for some kip then back on in the morning for a few hours before heading to Weymouth and home.
Fishing by 9, out went fish again.
All quiet in the sun and flat seas.... Too quiet for turbot I said to myself ?
After a while and no interest, I put a bit of leftover worm on one rod, and soon had some interest... A surprise dragonet... Love these things.
Next was a real surprise..... A cod!!... Wow didn't expect that tbh.
Next was a sole. then to finish a 2nd dragonet, before the parking ran out!
On Chesil now, target gar, and try for a red mullet.... Then squid later.
Out went a bottom rod, in came a ballan, out it went again, in came a ballan!... And on and on.... Pulled that in, and put a float on the 2nd flattie rod.... Gar in seconds, another, another.... Had 5 mins of that... Had a coffee!.... Tried again for fun, had a few which I put back then a good scrap from a mackerel pushing 1lb.
Had a bite to eat and set up the squid rod.
Then put out the bottom rod again, but cast to a diff area.... This time it was quiet, so put a 2nd out.
Strangely it was now all quiet.
Then the rod slammed over!.... A better fish on the worm.... Then it came off ... I'm thinking a last ballan of a better size.
That was it on worm, think the crabs just stripped the baits as the sun went down.
Out came the squid rod... Very quiet... Eventually I hooked a lump that didn't fight like a squid..... Turned out it was a cuttle ?.... Only my 2nd ever landed... These things always seem to fall off!!
In fact, this one did as I dragged it ashore on a wave, but I managed to get a foot behind its slither back to freedom!
The squid slog carried on and I was finally rewarded with a couple, and this time a 2nd cuttle which did get off on the shoreline and away this time
Can't complain, a couple lost fish, but a cracking trip again.
Best squid was about 12" long.
Cheers Si
