I went fishing at West parade Hythe last night.
I was on my own.
Jax was with friends getting gattered on cocktails.
It was bliss.
I had the beach more or less all to myself.
I had the cricket on the radio and was at one with myself.
The plan was to fish one rod on fish baits to try and tempt a thornback ray and the other on small worm baits desperately hoping for some dabs.
I poured out a cuppa and sat back in anticipation. I did not have to wait long before the worm rod was tapping away.
Pin sea rats. Lots and lots of pin sea rats. Every cast on the worm rod saw single, double, triple and even quadruple shots of sea rats. I think quadruple shots is a bit much, especially as I was only using 3 hooks.
Each and every fish was skinny and emaciated. I think one may have been in size, but the rest ( 50 plus when I stopped counting) were all well under size.
Hopes were high that the ray rod would produce the goods.
2 hours in and the baits were coming back untouched by rats or dogs, so at least any rays out there stood a chance of finding the bait.
After those two hours, packs of dogs arrived, any hope of a ray virtually disappeared. However, I kept on casting fresh baits, you never know do you?
End result was 11 dogs and 3 rats on the ray rod.
I guess over 60 fish counts as a result?
Not really the same as a nice brace of unicorn's is it though?
And, not a single dab either!
Till next time......
