I knew I really shouldn’t but I’d felt Chesil calling me for a couple of weeks so decided to give myself a day off yesterday, ignore the price of fuel and head down there.
Did actually have quite a bit of work to do and I knew if I went I’d need to get up early today (?) and crack through it.

Hesitated until 2pm Wednesday then checked the forecast and Thursday seemed the best weather window for at least a week, so figured what the hell and pulled the trigger on half a pound of ragworm.

The target was plaice, of course, and in the local parlance I decided to head ‘down west’.

Some useful advice from Tat and I was all set.

The day didn’t start as planned when I somehow managed to switch the alarm off at 7am and was dozing pleasantly with a purring cat when I realised it was 8.30. Oops.
As often happens with me, once the early start has passed I can’t be arsed to rush.
So ambled around drinking coffee and playing with feathers on a stick until I could finally move.

Picked up the bait about 12 and decided it would be rude not to relieve them of fresh blow lug while I was there too. £30 on bait. Ouch.

Arrived at the mark and tackled up. It was going to be mostly a braid and mangle day although the rods I have do need upgrading.
It wasn’t the best casting if I’m honest but I’m forever hopeful ?

Very little happened for three hours. Well okay, nothing happened.
The worm was mostly coming back, which is always good, but no bites.
To be honest, I hadn’t expected a great deal. The plan really had been to get away somewhere different for the day and relax in a bit of sun, without having to move gear every five minutes as on my coast, or clamber over rocks.
So that at least was successful!

After about three hours I finally had a bite and brought in… a chunky dogfish.
We’ve all seen pictures of dogfish ?

@chesilpete walked past and stopped for a chat, with some useful advice too.
I didn’t immediately twig who he was but stood there putting together the little white dog etc and finally worked it out, lol.
I was quite tired by then!

Had a little rattling bite and finally got the target, albeit very small (that’s not a 2lb lead! ?)

I’d pretty much had enough but had quite a bit of still lively fresh lug left, so felt I should walk it up to Pete and also introduce myself, seemed rude not to, after I’d twigged who I’d spoken with.
His advice of using bigger baits certainly helped me to hook the target.

So we had a good chat, during which he had about three or four pout, but I had a long drive back so eventually had to excuse myself and go back to retrieve my rods and pack up.
Both rods had tiny pout on so they doubled the fish tally!

Not a great day in terms of fishing but good to meet other people and at least get the target.
And to just switch off from everything else for a few hours and actually get a bit of warmth from the sun for a change!

If you’re still awake, thanks for reading!

Great report. Target species so mission accomplished.

Great report Meeester Feeesh! Lovely photo and target species achieved. Always good to meet another forum member too! ??????

Good to see you Mr Fish and good to chat.....
I finally found a decent flat by the light of that massive moon!.
I picked that rig up! a lovely yellow lead :)
Well done Pete and yes good to chat!

A plaice? Well done! What sort of size?

Glad you found the rig, thank you. I was worried about a dog picking it up or getting it in their feet the next morning.
Indeed, a pretty lead! ??

My best so far.... no monster but 1.10 - 1.12 @ a guess.

Nice! Nowt wrong with that!

I wanted to fish a bit longer but I was hanging by then, needed to get home
How long a drive Chisel to yours? Gotta be near a couple of hours I guess?

Yep, two or two and a bit in daytime when the dopey feckers are about and I can do it in about 1:45 on the way back
Same when I went Beesands from here end of last summer. A good hour & a half to get there with Grockles and getting stuck behind a bus, but about 50mins coming home after 10.30pm.

Unfortunately the East Devon roads and the A35 in daytime seem to be a bit infested with older folks who can’t go above 35 on a pretty decent 60 road .

And grockles in season, of course.

And feckin camper vans! ?

I must admit when I finally pulled up in the car park I thought I’d stepped onto a film set for The Walking Dead ???

Keep thinking about a return visit to Beesands/Slapton to try for some spotties, but the chest is reluctant and the cost of fuel worrying. Much as I love Jeepy, Jeepy loves Gasoline!
