Hi all! Well, after that horrendous cold spell with hours of sitting about, trying to remember what a fish looked like, I’ve finally had a couple of more fruitful sessions.
My first was on Tuesday, the wind had swung right round to the south and it was a neap tide.... perfect conditions for a ray, especially after a few milder days.
I got to my mark on the N.Kent coast and wasn’t waiting long at all for a decent pull. Baby ray no.1 was soon at my feet at 4lbs on the nose.
Half hour went by and no.2 was a slight improvement at 5lbs 12oz. I ended the night on 4 in total but at only 4lbs 6oz and 4lbs 9oz, there was nothing to get too excited about.
I’d planned to return the following evening but my wife got held up at work and by the time I managed to get out, it was practically high tide already. I scrapped plan A as it was a little more time consuming to get to and headed to one of my more regular marks. It was a very pleasant evening but the fish didn’t want to play ball and I blanked. Thursday night saw me fall asleep on the sofa after two late ones so that was a write off but by Friday night, I was raring to go again.
I pitched up at another different mark this time as the tides were getting bigger, I figured this one is a little deeper and they might not have quite moved off yet. I got set up and poured myself a coffee but before I could even take a sip, my left hand rod was steadily bending seaward. Another small male at 4lbs 7oz but spirits lifted, I fished on. Unfortunately that was my lot for the night though and despite staying on wayyyy too late, I couldn’t muster even a whiting. Annoyingly, I lost a set of gear on the breakwater and as the tide receded, I could see my line but try as I might, I just couldn’t reach it.
Luckily, I took the dog for a walk today though and to my surprise, my gear was still there, safely retrieved as the tide was low enough. Happy days!!
As the title says, at least a few are showing now... I just hope I’m not continually cursed with the small ones again like last year!
