Hi all! So last night I set out for a little session, fishing down to low water. I got to my mark and got set up, expectations were very low. I’ve had several blanks of late and nothing more than a few whiting all year.
An hour or so went by and unless my eyes deceived me, I’m sure I saw a bite!! I eagerly watched on in anticipation but nothing happened and I began to assume my wishful mind had just been playing games with me.
Shortly after, I decided to nullify the boredom and began to wind in. It actually felt a little weighty! As I got to the shoreline, I was surprised to see my first dogfish of the year but alas, it let go in the surf and swam off before I could grab it. Normally this would be a result so as not to waste time dealing with the pest but in such dire times, I was actually a little peeved!
Another hour or so went by and I confirmed my catch properly with a second dog of the evening. This perked me up and I celebrated with a coffee! As I sat supping, I leaned back and glanced up to see my newly cast rod slacken slightly. I sat up and a few moments later, it loosened further still. I did my best to be patient and finished my coffee with one eye transfixed on the rod tip.
With no further signs of life I figured my third doggie had either swum off or was just lying motionless on the bait. I picked the rod up and began to wind but as I tightened up on the slack, I realised the line was wayyy further off to my right than where I’d cast it. Furthermore, it felt heavy. Too heavy for a dog. .......Surely not?
A few moments later and I was ecstatic as the surf broke and two green eyes reflected up at me from the shoreline, YASSSS!!
No monster at 3lbs 12oz but my first ray of the year was more than a happy sight after the start to the year so far.
I fished on for another couple of hours and managed another 3 doggies with thankfully not a whiting in sight.
I might’ve stayed longer if not for work the following day but I didn’t want to be greedy anyway, I think I was more than lucky to catch what I did!!
