    South West Unlucky whiting!

I remember in some previous years the whiting were gone from the Tamar after Christmas but they seem to be hanging on this year. They are getting very roed up so will probably be out at sea spawning soon. Conger are feeding every trip but were out in the deepest water today. They seem to feed...

    South West Unlucky whiting!

This unfortunate 1.5lb whiting fell foul of a big eel before I could retrieve it. At first I thought I'd snagged, then there was a heavy weight and a big wrench before I wound in what was left of my catch. Shame the big eel didn't attack the other end with two hooks in! I landed two strap conger...

    Travel rod and reel

Where are you going to use this outfit and what are you fishing for? If it's bass in the UK the quality of the reel drag isn't so important as lightness and good line lay, but if you're going abroad for hard-fighting warm-water species such as bonefish, jacks, bonito etc it definitely is! PH

    Surf lure fishing

bombardashop.com The INNO ones are brilliant: cast well, hardly ever tangle and are available in different weights and densities from floating to fast sinking. I use them with 130mm Red Gill Rascals and a 6ft fluoro trace on a 10ft rod. The shop is in Denmark but postage is no problem and the...

    South West Soggy Success

Persistent rain didn't dampen my spirits during a two-hour session at my local pier tonight. The whiting were in and liked my home-caught mackerel bait. There will be some happy herring gulls in Stonehouse Pool when I take them the remains tomorrow! Whiting used to disappear after Christmas here...

    Surf lure fishing

Tactics still work but bombardas from the bombarda shop in Denmark are much more efficient. PH

    mini long line

Many years ago, my pal AW and his parents used to holiday in a chalet on the cliff at Whitsand Bay in Cornwall. They would dig sandeels for bait at low tide and lay a ground line, wading out and weighting it at both ends with a large stone. They caught all sorts of fish, including bass, turbot...

    Savage Gear seeker lures...

I carry my rod by my side, butt first at the point of balance. Then if you trip you don't stab the tip into the ground. If you slip and fall, just drop the rod to the side so you don't take it with you and land on it. This system also minimises problems when carrying a made-up rod through trees...

    ?

Like many people, I had a 484 in the 60s, but mine was paired with a narrow-spooled Penn Squidder. It had a simple but effective air brake system but the plastic spools tended to blow up. We used to call the Sea Streak the Sea Shriek due to its distinctive noise when casting. I also used a...

    ?

I live in central Plymouth and can walk to various Tamar shore spots, Plymouth Sound marks such as West Hoe pier and my boat in Stonehouse Pool. The fishing is a bit patchy at present, but I'm having fun float-fishing for mackerel from the pier and have had a few boat trips in the river...

    South West Eel meet again

Flipper, I can give you more useful info (but not my best marks) if you'd like to PM me. Do you have a boat? PH

    South West Eel meet again

I spent a lot of time fishing for gilts last year and ended up with 54 to 6lb, mostly around 2lb and all from 'a local estuary' This year I'm going to try some new ideas and hope for a double. I know they exist. Ideally you are looking for water temperature of 15c or more, but anything over 12c...

    South West Eel meet again

I'm not really a big conger fan, John, but they fill a void when not much else is biting, and with big baits and livebait out there there is always the chance of a cod, a big bass or a ray. Conger do fight well, and it's nice to catch something which really pulls back! PH

    Thresher from the shore!!

A big tuna hooked on a lure from the shore: this has already happened to a bass angler in Cornwall. Tuna have been reported just yards from the shore in Start Bay in Devon. A friend of a friend fishing among tuna a few miles off Plymouth last autumn had a tuna take a mackerel he was reeling in...

    South West Eel meet again

I fear it may be early June before it really gets going again (same with the gilts), but I think it's mostly down to water temperature. Bait in the river helps too! I'll be trying as soon as conditions look promising. PH

    How many

I've carried one on the boat ever since cuting my hand badly on a bait knife while 7 miles out to sea. Wrapped my hand in a dirty, fishy rag and dripped blood over the boat all the way home. PH

    South West Eel meet again

Despite a tiny tide and filthy water, I was back on the Tamar aboard 'Piranha' again today. It soon became apparent that the floodwater had pushed the whiting out to sea, so it was down to resident fish to provide some action. At first it was just pout, one of which went down on my downtide rod...
