    Ray Fishing in Daylight

Generally small eyes like to hunt at first and last light. On the Devon and Dorset beaches they have feeding spells that revolve around changes mid tide cycle. Either that or fish when the water is coloured but has calmed after a blow. In the BC every mark is different, but to be fair thornies...

South Coast Chesil... First sole session of the year.

They were being caught up to the end of January in the BC. A mate of mine went out to target them last week of January and had two! I will start targeting them last week of April into May in the BC. I find that they appear up top early, then gradually drop down channel. They do hang around...

South Coast Chesil... First sole session of the year.

I think that there are sole on the usual spots all year around. If the tides and conditions are right they are very predictable. The thing that stops me targeting them is the nuisance fish, namely being once the whiting arrive. I've had sole every month of the year on chesil, with proper numbers...

South Coast Chesil... First sole session of the year.

Headed down to West chesil on Saturday to be greeted by calm conditions and dirty water. I chose an area that always holds sole and with the tide being perfect and topping out into darkness the 3 hook clip downs were sent out baited with lug and rag. First fish to grace my nephews rod were pout...

    Sole

If I remember correctly, there was one small one @ 1lb10oz and the biggest was 2lb9oz. Most of them were over 2lb. I did put a few back that were lightly hooked and left feeding fish as I didn't want to take any more back home. They do have a habit of swallowing a bait out of site. I've had...

    2 hook cascade rig

I've only experienced it on chesil. The gars can be a nightmare! You can see them, you know they are there, but you can't get any interest unless you drop right down to say 4lb line. The bream are the same, hot, sunny days, crystal clear water, light lines rule. Any chop or colour to the sea and...

    2 hook cascade rig

Bream and gars can be really finicky feeders in clear water. Dropping line diameters and changing over to flouro carbon lines will definitely put more fish on the beach. Regarding cascade rigs, I use a 3 hook clip down with 6-8 inch identical hook links for a large part of my fishing, works...

South Coast What a difference a few years makes!

I was wiped out by that same trawler at cogden earlier in the year, he was 80 yards out. I've also caught him trawling in a prohibited area a few years back. I started to him him and he soon headed out. Wayne could pass on some of that footage because I've a feeling he shouldn't be trawling in...

South Coast What a difference a few years makes!

I have to agree with this sadly. Bass numbers are definitely the lowest I can remember. Not many breeding fish left!

South Coast What a difference a few years makes!

I think 2014 was when we had that mental run of fish 2lb to 3lb? You could get 20 or 30 a session. Was it the following year when they came back 6 to 11lb fish? I'm unsure of the dates but I remember that first stir up in September, I think I had 10 cod over 6lb in a few hours 😂

South Coast What a difference a few years makes!

The boats fished more offshore back in the day. Probably more boats and more fish to go around. Nowadays they often trawl close to the beach, catching the last dregs of what fish are left. Probably not worth the fuel to head offshore. I'd imagine technology has improved massively allowing the...

South Coast What a difference a few years makes!

Regarding the codling, I'm old enough to remember when the fishing was good. Bags of quality codling, numbers of 7,8,9lbers. Those years on chesil when you could literally catch as many as you wanted. Same in the BC come spring you would be sick of catching them. Nowadays the thought of freezing...

    Match rigs

It depends what you want to target? Mid water species, a clip, a couple of shot near the clip, long snood with a small hook and head hooked rag, mackerel slip etc... Basically enough weight to get the snood to slide down the line. If you want to nail a bait in tide, then you can clip a rig on of...

    Match rigs

If its 3 hooks, then you definitely want to use a 3 hook clip or flapper, make different rigs with either long or short snoods. The other option during a match is to fish a 2 hook rig then put a slider down the line. This allows you to gish at different distances on the same cast.

    New Beach casting multiplier advice

Definitely a slosh for up there. I'd go for the 30s, put the red blocks in and loaded with 25lb line.
